Four-Day Foundation Course

The original Dark Angels course, this is a biennial 4-day/5-night residential course at Moniack Mhor, Scotland's Creative Writing Centre, near Inverness in the central Scottish Highlands.

Hone your writing and enrich your understanding of the power of language and storytelling. Expect ample time for discussion and personal writing.

Morning seminars cover techniques and approaches and set exercises. One or two briefs are set for the course and afternoons are for writing. Our creative exercises focus on business communications. We ask writers to also create a personal piece of writing.
Tutors hold half-hour writers' surgeries during the afternoons for each student. Evenings feature readings from the tutors, dinner at a local restaurant, and on the final night, readings by students.

All Dark Angels courses explore the role of imaginative language, and the importance of stories and narrative writing, in successful business and brand communications.

A short tale from the Highlands...

"There is something very powerful in learning so much, without a sense of having been taught. A windswept mountain, eleven strangers and communal bathrooms was never my idea of a great time. How wrong I was. Imagine a combination of The Big Chill, Dead Poets Society and Braveheart. That's the Moniack experience. Somehow, and imperceptibly, John and Jamie wove together the people, the place, and the power of words. The week at Moniack went straight into my treasure box of memories."

Venue & facilities

Scotland's Creative Writing Centre, Moniack Mhor, is the only purpose-designed writers’ centre that we use as a Dark Angels venue. We keep going there for the simple reason that we love it.

Moniack Mhor consists of a converted croft house and farm steading in a dramatic setting on a hilltop close to Loch Ness. The house has long views to Ben Wyvis, one of Scotland’s highest mountains, and the distant hills of Wester Ross. In the foreground is a typical Highland landscape of birch woods, grazing land and moorland.

Moniack Mhor has existed as a writing centre and retreat since 1993. Only 14 miles from Inverness, it feels remote from civilisation. As befits its location, the emphasis indoors is on warmth, comfort and the cosiness of open fires. A recent addition to the working spaces is the charming circular, straw-bale eco-studio or ‘hobbit house’ in the garden, which provides an atmospheric setting for group sessions or quiet time for personal writing.
